Dr. Donald M. Ahern graduated from the College of Liberal Arts, Cum Laude, at Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. He is a member of that Academies Honor Society and the Phi Sigma Biological Honor Society. He attended Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, (DDS).

Dr. Ahern started his dental career mentored by his family dentist in Somerville, MA before moving to Maine to raise a family and become involved with a growing progressive dental practice. He associated himself with Dr. John T. Trefethen and became the president of Ellsworth – Bucksport Dental Associates when Dr. Trefethen retired in the year 2000.

Dr. Ahern averages 50 hours of continuing education annually, this enables him to remain progressive and incorporate new procedures and technologies into the practice such as implant restoration. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Maine Dental Association and the Hancock County Dental Society. For the past 28 years, Dr. Ahern has served on the Maine Dental Association as a member of the Executive Council and is the  president of the Hancock County Dental Society. He is an American Heart Association CPR and First Aid instructor.

Dr. Ahern is vested in the community and believes in giving back. He volunteers his time with the Special Olympics and for the past 20 years has served as the water quality and invasive plant monitor for the State of Maine for Lower Patten Pond. He is an Assistant Scout Master of Troop 86 in Ellsworth. He has completed the Wood Badge Leadership training and is a Merit Badge Counselor in first aid, emergency preparedness, communication, personal fitness, snow sports, skating, one of only two Dental Merit Badge Councilors in the State of Maine.

In his free time he enjoys spending time with his children, botany, skiing, tennis, golf, hiking, boating, running, karate, and music.
